The rise of internet radio, the stagnation of podcasting and the contentious issue of remuneration of “social media consultants” are all hot topics in the South African media and technology industries at the moment.

After some early research into the topics the research team at Rival Industrial (the owners of Bundublog) have started to put together a full interview process to look more closely at these issues and identify trends that will become signifcant in the coming year.

The following two industry reports will become available over the next 4-6 weeks and will provide insight into some of the trends and happenings in the sector as well as provide feedback from media planners, consultants, agencies and some of South Africa’s thought leaders:

The emergence of internet radio – fiction or opportunity?
Release date: Friday 30 July 2010
Delivery: Via e-mail in .PDF
Cost: R375 excl. VAT

Is internet radio simply a passing fad in South Africa or is it a genuine media platform to become aware of and part of future media strategy?

Which are SA’s biggest and most successful podcasts and what drives them?

Is podcasting dead and dying?

How do these tools fit into media planners future strategies?

What are reasonable rates for advertising companies to consider when using these platforms?

How much money will media planners be directing to these platforms over the next 12 months?

These are the questions this report will try to answer following interviews and data collected from industry professionals.

Social media – where is the future?
Release date: Wednesday 11 August 2010
Delivery: Via e-mail in .PDF
Cost: R375 excl. VAT

Facebook, FourSquare, Twitter, blogs and other social media tools – what is hot and what’s going out of fashion?

Is there a future for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) practitioners and what price to place on their services?

An attempt to standardise the remuneration rates of social media practitioners for their services and skills

With the run up to the 2010 World Cup there have been some shocking stories of developers and social media consultants charging what some in the industry describe as “exorbitant” sums of money for services rendered in the social media space. Short-term profits have been put ahead of long-term sustainability of the sector and this report attempts to quantify what clients feel are reasonable for campaigns and how to measure success or failure.

Silicon Cape are holding their third networking event and this apparently includes some juicy announcements from PayPal.

Below is the official invite from the Silicon Cape guys. Please try and get out there to support them:

Time: June 28, 2010 from 6pm to 11pm
Location: The Old Biscuit Mill
Street: 373 Albert Road
City/Town: Cape Town
Website or Map: http://maps.google.co.za/maps…
Event Type: networking
Organized By: Elodie Kleynhans

Hello clever and good looking people of the Silicon Cape (and beyond).

The time has once again come for us to eat, drink, network and be merry.

We will once again frequent the hay bales of the Old Biscuit Mill for an atmospheric evening, and this time you won’t have to queue for the cash bar.

Thanks to our friends at PayPal, drinks will be on the house, and the same goes for snacks. Not bad hey!

Now all that is more than enough reason to attend, but to sweeten the deal you will be graced by the presence of European tech investor, Saul Klein who will be sharing his experiences with us.

Oded Zehavi (PayPal Regional Director) and Chris Savides (FNB complementary Online Services, GM) will also be making a couple of very interesting (and indeed lucrative) announcements. We can’t tell you too much right now, but it does involve a competition that could get you from the Cape to the Valley.

So go ahead, etch the 28th into your digital diaries and prepare for a great night of networking.

Yours in tech start up excellence
The Silicon Cape Team

The Vuvuzela in the street at 6am this morning confirmed it – the Fifa 2010 World Cup is officially here!

We have been waiting for so long for this day to arrive and when you look around and see the excitement and optimism on everybody’s face, you wonder what all the pessimism was about.

Things like the Gautrain have received a lot of support this week and it is great to see South Africans so keen to try it out and replace some of our dependance on traffic. This country is a MUCH better place for this event.

Don’t forget to send us your World Cup opening weekend pictures – webmaster@rival.co.za – and you could be in line to win R300!

Honk your hooter, blow you Vuvu and lets make some noise as we make this event one to be remembered!

When God loses faith in humankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity’s only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner with the Archangel Michael. This out of the way diner becomes an unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race.

Director: Scott Stewart
Cast: Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Doug Jones, Kate Walsh

Bundublog did a bit of research and in most cases the reviewers rated the movie a 6 or 7 out of 10 with some questionable logic leaps. But if you want the fire and brimstone and angels weilding machine guns then this movie could be a goodie.
